Tue 01 Dec 2015 - Travel to Whangerei
Bit of an uneventful day today. Got up early, despite Yvonne's lack of enthusiasm, to catch the 0900 bus so we could get to the ferry terminal on time. Glenn stood on the open deck as the ferry pushed off and wistfully bade farewell to lovely Waiheke (yesterday's cycle ride already seeming much more fun). At the Auckland end we caught a bus to the Airport where we collected our rental car. We rented from one of the many 'bargain basement' companies that offer old, high mileage cars and we've never seen so many entries on a damage record!
So, we set off in our tiny Diahatsu Sirion, with over 200,000 miles on the clock, to central Auckland to visit the lovely Dr Clare for round two of our vaccinations. As we'd got on so well with all the folks at the practice last time we were there, Glenn had rather cheekily sent an email asking if anyone could lend us a cool box until we return on Christmas Eve for our final jabs. Once she'd finished our injections Clare mentioned this and produced two polystyrene boxes, the ones they use for shipping medical supplies, complete with custom fitting cool blocks for us. Result!
After a pleasant journey, despite the slight dodgy gearbox, through lovely countryside we arrived at the house of Caroline and Peter, our AirBnB hosts, for our overnight stop at Whangerei. We were both very bemused to find the house bedecked in Christmas decorations when the sun was shining and we were both in T shirts and shorts. It's just not right!
Yvonne cooked up two batches of chilli con carne in readiness for the next couple of nights and we spent the night chatting with our hosts.
For the next three says we've chartered a yacht to sail around the Bay of Islands so no blog updates for a while. Until then...
