Turtles, what turtles.

Thu 05 Nov - Makena

After a better night's sleep and and leisurely breakfast we packed a lunch, rented some snorkels and set off to Malu'aka (Turtle) beach - famed for its green turtles. It was an overcast day and we plodded to the south end of the beach where, allegedly, the best reef is. Glenn immediately donned his snorkel gear and swam 200m offshore for the reef leaving Yvonne unconvinced by the temperature. Although the reef was home to loads of different multicoloured fish not a single turtle was to be found. After some lunch and a spot of sunbathing Glenn again tried to convince Yvonne to join him on the reef but as the surf had got up a bit she was having none of it so he set off alone. Once again lots of fish but no turtles. As he left the waves and walked up the beach, flippers and goggles (fins and face mask to the enthusiast) in hand, Glenn met an American lady who asked how the waves were and what he'd seen. She then told him that she'd seen three turtles that morning around a group of rocks just 10m from the shore!

As well as the snorkelling we'd come to this beach as the starting point for a sunset cruise that was the first event in the extended wedding celebrations. At the appointed time we walked up to the adjacent resort to meet the other guests none of whom were our age. Yvonne then divulged that it had been promoted as young persons event but, heck, we should go anyway. There were 2 official photographers and a video man whose camera looked like it would film a widescreen blockbuster!  One of the photographers now a local, originated from Manchester, giving Glenn a not to be missed opportunity to discuss, for some time, the perils of the United with him.

The pretty young women were glammed, up clearly not having read the memo stating 'be prepared to get wet'.  Getting on the catamaran involved wading into the sea and timing the best opportunity between waves to hop up the steps to get onboard.  We both managed to mis-time the waves to perfection and got absolutely drenched.  The groom, Satya, chivalrously waded in with bride, Kusum, in his arms. She looked stunning tonight.
Open bar, gorgeous fresh food, happy and lively conversations with young guests, this was a perfect way to get to know each other. The Pu (conch) was blown as the sun set to say goodbye to the sun and thanks to the land.  Now time to hop off and get wet again!
