Life viewed through the safety of a face mask.

Sat 14 Nov - Tour round West Maui

After little sleep we got up at 6.30am, breakfasted and then went snorkelling in what we had been told was a good spot. Yvonne gave up quite quickly as the water was chilly and rough but Glenn soldiered on for a while longer. On preparing to leave Glenn highlighted to Yvonne a local sign near where we had just swam.  It warned of Shark attacks in the area.

We pootled up the highway along west Maui until we found a nice beach to grab a cat nap. Once it became too hot we drove along further to a headland at Kapalua, famous for jagged rocks known as the Dragons Teeth. The volcanic rock and lava here was quite different. We did a short coastal path walk along the front of this resort, which had been the very original resort area in Maui back in the day.

Having learnt our lesson yesterday, we searched in the daylight for a good spot to camp overnight and found a lovely spot at on the headland at Honolau above a bay which apparently is great for surfing - if you can get down the rocks to the ocean. We noticed there were a few guys out surfing in what looked like quite a swell.

Satisfied we could get back here later, we continued further up the coast road to see Nakalele Blowhole, as we suspected this would be rather splendid given the amount of rain and wind over the last few days. We were not disappointed. The blowhole was shooting up jets of water around 40 foot in the air and we were sprayed with the sea salt.  It was a very inspiring place.

We made our way back to camp, yes, watched the sunset, made dinner and had an early night to catch up on sleep. Yvonne made sure of this by consuming a larger glass of wine than normal.

What you don't know about won't hurt you!

The dragons teeth.

Another torchlight, culinary masterpiece. Masterchef next year?
