Spring clean

Weds 13th January 2016 - Athol to Queenstown

It had rained all night and this morning there were light showers but it was very cold out here in the middle of nowhere. Luckily the chalet had a brilliant electric fire which we sat in front of and caught up with family and friends via the internet, hearing how atrocious the weather back in the UK is with constant rain and now the threat of snow. Friends in the French Alps had been faced with wet conditions but luckily the snow had started to fall there too. Seems a good time to be away.

We gave the campervan a spruce up and left late in the morning all clean and tidy. Today we are on our way to Queenstown. Along the highway we stopped off at Garston in a honey shop and Glenn bought the first one he tasted.

Next on to Queenstown, famous as a pioneering gold mining town with plenty of Scots making this area their home there are still plenty of reminders of its Scottish roots. An all year round resort with skiing in Winter and known as the adrenaline junkies town in the Summer; bungy jumping and zorbing was founded here, jetboat rides along Lake Wakatipu, fantastic mountain biking, great hiking and the town is full of bars, restaurants and lots of strapping, fit youngsters.

We past through town driving along the shoreline of the lake towards Glenorchy which lies at the head of the lake. We found a freedom camp area called 25 mile creek and parked right on the lake shoreline just short of the sandy beach. The views from the campervan were great. Snowy topped mountains, tree lined mountains and small green hillsides all along the backdrop of the turquoise lake. Not as dramatic as the Fiordland but with a distinct Scotland feel.

Reviews for this camping area had all mentioned the terrible sandfly problem here and although is was very windy outside with little chance of these buggers keeping in flight, we locked down the hatches and windows and had a sweltering nights sleep.

A roof without wheels for one night.

Another fantastic camping site
