Fri 8th January 2016 - Around Manapouri and Te Anua
With little sleep after last night’s interruption we awoke late and slowly got under way. We’d hoped for an early start to allow us time to do some of the day walks in the area but tiredness and the consequential lack of enthusiasm led us to Te Anua, the main town in the area, alongside the wind chopped surface of its eponymous lake, to refuel the van, re-stock with beer and book tomorrow’s cruise on Milford Sound. After a leisurely lunch and an unintentional tour around Te Anua’s latest housing development we wound our way up the picturesque road to Milford Sound occasionally stopping at photo opportunities of the dramatic snow covered peaks with their steep wooded sides that form huge lake filled valleys.
With the clouds closing in above the peaks and light rain falling, the norm for these parts it appears, we found a remote campsite with a nice view and settled in for an early night. The brochure brochure stated the site was for 5 tents/campervans but in this case 10 of us.
